Abbreviated Albany – Capital Region Relocation Guide

I was asked by a client who was relocating to Albany, for more information about the Capital Region area. I never hesitate to sing the praises of Albany and the Capital Region. From Saratoga, to downtown Albany, to the Catskills, and Adirondack mountains, the region boosts some of the most desirable real estate in the country. This is an abbreviate version primarily focused on Albany.

Capital Region Area Attractions

I’ve included a link to the brochure from the Albany Visitor’s Bureau. This brochure is very comprehensive and highlights the Capital Region area attractions. Be patient the link can take a few minutes to load, the brochure is a large 16 MB fie.

Albany Fine Dining

Two of my favoriate downtown Albany dining options incorporate Asian fusion and American bistro cuisine: Yono’s and D.P.’s Brasserie.  If you’re looking for good Italian in downtown Albany, don’t miss Cafe Capriccio.

Center Square in Albany boosts many restaurants and bars. Two of the most notable fine dining options are The Wine Bar and McGuire’s.

Winter Activities

If people know one thing about upstate New York, it’s our winters. Admittedly, our Capital Region has had more mild winters in the last few years. In fact, New York City received as much if not more snow than Albany did last year. But if you are moving to Albany or Saratoga, it is always a good idea to think about winter activities. Of course one of the most popular options is skiing and snowboarding.

There are three area mountains, between 1-2 hours away. Stratton is the largest mountain, within 2 hours ( about 1 hr & 45 minutes away) in Southern Vermont. The other two mountains, West Mountain and Jiminy Peak, are closer and offer night skiing, approximately 45 minutes from Albany.

NYS Higher Education

The State University of New York, SUNY, system is one of the most renowned higher education institutions in the country. The top three colleges are Suny GeneseoSuny Binghamton, and Suny Albany. Another little known secret is Cornell University also offers an in-state tuition for its state-side school.
