Small Biz 518 – 9 Miles East Farm

9 Miles East Farm is located in the town of North Umberland and located 9 miles east of Saratoga Springs. The farm has been there since 2004 and their goal is to improve the soil each year so they can keep a significant amount of their land in cover crops every year. They plow down the buckwheat, clover, and rye to build organic matter and biological activity in the soil. They also use cover crops between rows to host beneficial insects and protect the soil. All of the inputs they are are omri-certified organic. 9 Miles East makes it easy for busy people to enjoy health local food. They deliver farm-made meals and their own harvested vegetables to workplaces and directly to subscribers.

Monticello Real Estate recently sat down and met with Gordon Sacks, owner and CEO of the farm. Watch the video below:

The farm has a 29 acre vegetable farm, and a commercial catering kitchen on the farm. Sacks says, “We have several different models, all focused on that same mission of let’s make it easy. Usually healthy is a hard choice.  We want to take that off the table and say the healthy choice is the easy choice.”

Sacks explains that people are busy these days and he knows how hard it is to find the time to eat together. He explains that family meals are important so they started the farm with the goal of providing ready-to-eat meals delivered to their subscribers. That mission has evolved over the years, but everything they do remains firmly grounded in the concept of bringing  good, healthy food to busy people. He says, “Healthy has to be easy, local has to be easy.  We don’t want to compete with the famers market. What we’re trying to do is create more customers for the farmers market.”

The farm offers a pizza delivery service, a subscription meal delivery program, and a a workplace wellness service for larger companies.
