Weekend Happenings

This weekend marks the beginning of December, and there is so much to do in the Capital Region to kick off the beginning of the month.

Ice Rink Opening Day – Empire State Plaza

The ice rink at Empire “Skate” Plaza is opening for the season on November 30!

  • Hours:  Noon to 8:00 p.m. seven days a week, weather permitting. Closed daily 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. for maintenance.
  • Cost to Skate: Free
  • Skate Rentals: $4 for adults, $3 for children 12 and under. A photo ID is required to rent skates. Every Saturday is Hannaford Free Skate Rental Saturday.
  • Amenities: Lockers, skate rentals, and refreshments are available in the glass pavilion adjacent to the rink.
Troy Night Out – Friday, November 30
Troy Night Out is a monthly arts and cultural event that takes place the last Friday of every month in Downtown Troy from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The event regularly draws thousands people onto the streets of Troy, and attendees are able to enjoy  art events, music venues, fine restaurants, as well as unique boutiques of all varieties.

This month’s theme: Shop Local, Give Local

Jingle Bell Run/Walk  – Saturday, December 1
Halfmoon Town Park

The Arthritis Foundation’s original Jingle Bell Run is a fun way to get decked out and be festive, while racing to raise funds and awareness to cure America’s #1 cause of disability. Put on your favorite holiday costume. Tie jingle bells to your shoelaces. ’Tis the season to live it up and be jolly for a reason!

Bring a team of friends, family and co-workers to run or walk, spread smiles and good cheer … and be a Champion of Yes! 100 percent of your registration fee and fundraising efforts go to this great cause.

Saratoga Festival of the Trees – November 28 – December 2
Saratoga Springs City Center

The Saratoga Springs City Center will be transformed into a winter fantasy filled with the bright colors and twinkling lights we all adore.

Between the many events, including Family Day Breakfast and Sundaes with Santa and the Preview Reception, the Festival is a joyously fun way to kick off the holiday season for children and adults alike.

The Festival’s main attraction is a wonderland of 250 delightfully decorated trees, wreaths and centerpieces all donated and designed by community sponsors. Visitors are encouraged to savor in this visual feast and experience the magical moments that fill our spirit with hope and gladness every holiday season.

Victorian Stroll – Sunday, December 2
Downtown Troy – 11 AM – 5 PM

Join in the merriment as the historic streets of downtown Troy transforms into a magical stage offering more than 100 free attractions, including the region’s top performers, ­musicians, dancers, magicians and storytellers. There will be rides, refreshments, an arts & crafts show and much more! Need to finish your holiday shopping? Throughout the afternoon, Troy’s fine shops, boutiques and galleries will be open for shopping. If you’re hungry, make sure to stop into many of Troy’s best eateries or for a quick bite, or visit our food court located at Monument Square.

Empire State Plaza Tree Lighting – Sunday, December 2
Empire State Plaza – 1- 6 PM

Glory in the grandeur of the lighting of the official New York State Holiday Tree, December 2, at the Empire State Plaza Tree Lighting and Fireworks Display. Taste of NY Holiday Market at New York State Museum and the Great Train Extravaganza are the same day. This is a full day of fun holiday-themed events that’s sure to get you in the holiday spirit!
